working on the idea of practical art

I love photography and mixed media art but it is difficult to sell it. In these times of economic challenges I have been working on ways to make what I call Practical Art. This is art that you can use and enjoy everyday. I am now making my photographs, art cards and mixed media pieces into sets of magnetic bookmarks. I read a lot and I am always folding back the edge of the page to save my place. Since starting to experiment with magnets and photographs I have not had this problem. The bookmarks stay where I leave them even if the book gets tossed around in my backpack. I can even hold where I stopped reading on the exact line. Plus I get to enjoy a little piece of art or nature every day. It makes me happy and I hope that it will make others happy this holiday season. These bookmarks are just the right size to put in stockings, attached to a birthday card,or give as a hostess gift. I always keep some in my briefcase to give out as thank you gifts to people who have helped me in some way. I see it as a way to do an act of kindness that keeps on giving. Anyway, if you are interested in these little art expressions or have any suggestions for new ones just let me know.

  3. Linda, I think your bookmarks are a great invention. That bluebird is my favorite too! I'll follow your blog - come visit me too. I'm going to be posting garden and wildlife things again, plus art too.

  5. I know what you mean about trying to do things for everyone. Practical art may indeed sell better just because people have a reason to buy it. I think even if our art is really marketable it still may not sell well because people don't really know what to do with it!
